Professor Sanjay Purkayastha: Expert status

Sanjay Purkayastha a consultant surgeon specialising in General Surgery, Bariatric and benign upper GI surgery. He carries out a high volume of elective and emergency general surgical, bariatric and benign upper GI work as well as trauma surgery in a Major Trauma Centre in London. He has also been appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Bariatric Surgery by Imperial College.

He is on a busy on call general surgery rota and have carried out over 1000 emergency GI laparoscopic cases including appendicectomies, perforated vicera, colectomies, upper GI cases, bariatric emergencies and trauma cases.

He has carried out over 4000 electve laparoscopic procedures of which around 1000 are bariatric procedures. This includes approximately 300 roux en-y gastric bypasses, 150 sleeve gastrectomies and 100 lap gastric bands. He was also one of the first surgeons in the UK to have carried out robotically assisted laparoscopic bariatric surgery including robotic gastric band and gastric bypass surgery. He also regularly carry out laparoscopy for trauma and have developed this service for the Major Trauma Centre that he work in. He also has a busy general surgery practise and have carried out over 400 hernia repairs and 400 laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

He has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers on surgery and presented papers and presentations (over 50) to many national and international meetings in surgery. His H-index is 26 (an index of H has published h papers each of which has been cited by others at least h times. Thus, the h-index reflects both the number of publications and the number of citations per publication) he was awarded the Norman Tanner medal from the Royal Society of Medicine for my work in 2005 and when he qualified as a doctor in 2000 qualified as Proxime Accesit for the university of London Gold Medal that year. He is one of the editors of Hospital Surgery, a general surgical text-book of more than 800 pages used as a reference by many surgeons worldwide and published by Cambridge Press. He is also member of the faculty of the Ethicon SORTED course (Surgery for Obesity, Registrar Training) where he has carried out live surgery for the surgeons on the course – namely carrying out laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery and sleeve gastrectomy and an emergency bariatric case live for the audience. He has also been invited by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and St. Mark’s Hospital, The Royal Society of Medicine and The Royal National Institute of Otolaryngology to speak on various aspects of bariatric surgery including complications of bariatric surgery. He was given an award for Excellence in Patient Care in December 2012 by the Division of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College. He actively submits his bariatric data prospectively to the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR) so that patients and clinicians can see his results transparently.

Professor Purkayastha and his team can provide causation, breach of duty and prognosis reports and second opinion for cases.

With the above experience in clinical and academic work, Professor Purkayastha has been asked as an expert to assess issues in medicolegal cases in general surgery, bariatric surgery and trauma surgery both for private litigation and for public prosecution cases. He uses evidence based principles and extensive literature review to formulate the above reports.
