Revisional Bariatric Surgery

What is a revisional bariatric surgery?

For patients that may have had bariatric surgery in other centres or many years ago when the newer procedures and techniques were not available they may chose to have further procedures to:

  • Offer a second chance at further / better weight loss

  • Help them with their weight related comorbidities

  • Control type 2 diabetes better

  • Manage a complication such as reflux, regurgitation, diarrhoea, chronic abdominal pain

Many patients have previously had open surgery many years ago when laparoscopic surgery was not available. Patients such as this can still have laparoscopic surgery to revise their previous procedures as our team is highly skilled at managing such cases.

Please do not hesitate to contact us and make an appointment to see how we can help you make the most informed decision for you.

Examples of revisional procedures

  • Previous gastric band - removed and a gastric bypass carried out

  • Previous gastric band - removed and a sleeve gastrectomy carried out

  • Previous sleeve gastrectomy - converted to a gastric bypass

  • Previous gastric bypass carried out - pouch made smaller or band put onto the existing pouch

  • Previous vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) - converted to a gastric bypass
